Business and Market Overview of Vietnam

Khal Mastan asked:

ECONOMY. In 1986, the Vietnamese government abandoned its Marxist economic policy and implemented “doi moi” (renovation) involving economic structural reforms. These reforms included modernising and liberalising the economy and developing more export driven industries. Vietnam joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) and became a signatory of the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (AFTA). The US-Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement in 2001 has brought major changes to Vietnam’s economy and hopes to become a member of the WTO in 2006.

Vietnam’s GDP grew at an average of 7.3% annually in 2000-2004 and reached US$44.5 billion by 2004 and unemployment declined from 6.4% in 2000 to 5.6% in 2004. However, inflation steadily increased reaching 7.8% by 2004 and prompted Vietnam’s government to implement monetary and fiscal controls to manage inflationary pressures.

The manufacturing sector contributed towards 40.1% of Vietnam’s GDP in 2004 while the service sector contributed 38.2%. The agriculture sector contributed towards 38.7% of the country’s GDP in 1990 but declined to 21.8% by 2004. Major industries include processed foods, garments and shoes, mining (coal and steel) cement, fertilisers, glass, tyres, paper and petroleum. Major agriculture products include rice, coffee, rubber, cotton, tea, pepper, soybean, cashew nuts, peanuts, sugar cane, peanuts, bananas, poultry and seafood.

DEMOGRAPHY. Vietnamese (also known as Viet or Khin) is the major ethnic community accounting for nearly 86% of the country’s population and reside mainly in the eastern half of the country. Minorities include Chinese who live mainly in the urban areas, Khmer Crom (related to the Khmers of Cambodia), Tays and Montagnards who live in the mountainous regions of the country.

In a government census, about 80% of the population do not subscribe to any religion but among those who do, 9% are Buddhist and 7% are Christians. Other religions practiced include Islam, Cao Dai and Hoa Hao. The national language is Vietnamese and languages spoken among the minorities include Tay, Muong, Khmer and Chinese (mainly Cantonese and Mandarin). English is the preferred second language but generally understood and spoken among the educated elite

The majority of the Vietnamese population live in the rural areas but the proportion of the urban population is gradually increasing from 19.7% in 1990 to 26.0% in 2004. Vietnam’s largest city is Ho Chi Minh City (population 5.0 million) and Hanoi (population of 3.5 million) followed by Nai, Haiphong and Dac Lac.

Household income in Ho Chi Minh City is nearly three times the national average - the city accounts for nearly half of all the motorbikes in Vietnam. An estimated 20% of the population live below the poverty level and mainly from rural households. 10%-15% of the households are middle to high-income households while 65%-70% are lower-income households.

INFRASTRUCTURE. Vietnam’s telecommunication systems lag behind many neighbouring countries in the region and therefore government puts great emphasis on its modernisation. Digital exchanges now connected to Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City and main lines have increased while the use of mobile telephones is growing. The national road system stretches from the northern to southern tip of Vietnam. Northern and southern Vietnam are served by two international airports and two main sea ports serving international shipping.

INTERNATIONAL TRADE. Vietnam’s major trading partners are the US, Japan, China, Australia, Germany, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and South Korea. Major exports include oil, seafood, rice, coffee, cashew nuts, rubber, tea, garments and shoes. Major imports include machineries and equipments, petroleum products, fertilisers, steel products, cotton, grains, cement and motorcycles.

CONSUMER USAGE OF TECHNOLOGY. There were nearly 10.1 million telephones installed in Vietnam and nearly 5.0 million mobile phone subscribers in 2004. The government is putting considerable efforts to modernise and improve the country’s telecommunication system but still lags compared to Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. Computer *********** is low; estimates vary from 2% to 4% of the population in 2004 and an estimated 5.8 million internet users. The *********** of television is only 20% and concentrated to homes in the cities and towns. Similarly, installation of refrigerators is concentrated in the cities where 60% of the homes have refrigerators.

RETAIL MARKET. Retail sales in Vietnam grew by 8%-12% annually from 2000 to 2004 brought about by increasing disposable income due to the country’s strong economic growth. Vietnamese consumers spend two-thirds of their income on retail purchases amounting to US$16.3 billion in 2004. Traditional wet markets and the “mom and pop” shops dominate the retail industry accounting for 95% of the total retail trade. Many of these retail shops measure no more than five square metres (54 square feet). Modern retail establishments are limited but gradually emerging in the country and generally locally owned businesses concentrated in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

FOOD CULTURE. Rice and noodles are the staple food of the Vietnamese but taste preference differs by region. Foods in central Vietnam are spicier while foods in northern and southern Vietnam are less spicy and tend to be saltier. The Vietnamese often dip their foods with chilli, garlic or fish sauce to add flavour. The French colonialists introduced European style bread and bakeries into the Vietnamese food culture. Western style fast food service establishments are beginning to emerge alongside the traditional snack bars, cake shops and mobile food carts.

Overview About Vietnam

huong nguyen asked:

To be proud as a Vietnamese person, we have an ambition to advertise Vietnamese culture and the beautiful landscapes to foreign visitors and provide you some tips when traveling in Vietnam and from that the foreigner can avoid culture shock.

Weather:

Although the weather in Vietnam is extremely variable, it’s possible to distinguish two main seasons: a dry season from November to May, and the rainy season from June to October. However, this generalization disguises considerable variations in other aspects of the weather throughout the country.

People: Nowhere in the world people smile as much as in Vietnam. Vietnamese people are very friendly, polite and generous. In general, we will make every effort to have foreign guests feel comfortable. In the cities and countryside towns, do not be surprised to be invited into a home to meet the family of someone you may have just met. These are the experiences that will enrich your visit to Vietnam.

Accommodation: In Vietnam is generally getting a bit difficulty. Whether you are in Vietnam on vacation or on business, it is not quite hard to find a hotel, especially the 5 or 4 star hotels in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.  You can book by yourselves for sure, but normally with quite expensive price.

Shopping: Shopping in Vietnam is a fun and interesting experience, and guarantees good bargains to those who know what to look for. It is true to say that you can find nearly anything in Vietnam. Markets vary from high class shopping malls, supermarkets to bustling open market, galleries, boutiques and street stalls.

In terms of shopping for tourists, Vietnam is most famous for its handicrafts, war souvenirs, authentic clothing, art, antiques and gems.

Food: Vietnamese Cuisine is a mixture of Chinese , French and a little Thai influence. It is probably one of the best cuisine in Asia . The basic ingredients of Vietnamese cuisine are rice and the famous fish-sauce “nouc mam”.

One of the specialities of Vietnamese cuisine is spring rolls - the ingredients and size vary - depending on within the region of the country . The traditional breakfast - chicken soup ( pho ga ) or beef soup ( pho bo ) is available at most of the food stalls on the main streets of nearly very city in Vietnam.

All common dishes with pork , fish , beef are on a menu - also expect to find , mostly in the North of Vietnam , restaurants serving snake and other ” delicacies “.

Transportation:

Not known for modern conveniences, Vietnam has an inconvenient transportation system.  This in itself has been an obstacle for the Vietnamese to overcome while advancing economically.  The main mode of transportation is that of the bicycle rickshaw, bicycles are also popular and are used for transport to and from work for most Vietnamese.  Others use it for carrying groceries and other items as well and have managed to make packing the bicycle almost an art with the tremendous loads that are carried.   Although improvements have been attempted, particularly with the major roadways, the main source of transportation for goods is by barge, utilizing the many rivers and canals.

Outdated ports, even major ones for international shipping, are still behind the times, as is the state-run Vietnamese Airlines.  The airline does have both domestic and international flights, but the fact that the majority of their planes are outdated Soviet models hinders growth.  The government is taking a more active role with the airline in that it is attempting to purchase new planes from Europe and the U.S.

What to bring: To prepare for your journey, begin with things that are critical - those that couldn’t be replaced in Vietnam if they were left behind or lost. Passports, tickets and so on are obvious, but the loss of a pair of spectacles or a pair of orthopedic shoes can ruin your holiday if you can’t manage without them - always carry spares.

If you forget something, it isn’t a disaster because you should be able to find a substitute locally. Good quality, ready to wear clothes are easily obtainable, although larger sizes are difficult to find. Exceptions are shoes (Vietnamese feet are generally a lot smaller than those of people in the West), brassieres and women’s swimsuits (for similar reasons!).

An Overview of the Vietnam War

June 19th, 2009 | Posted in Politics   Comments Off
Nick Carter asked:

The Vietnam war – also known as the American War in Vietnam, Indochina War and the Vietnam Conflict – took place from the year 1959 all the way through to 1975. The war ended with a North Vietnamese victory some decade and a half later. The human cost of the war in Vietnam will never fade. Over one million military personnel and over one million civilians died. The war was between North Vietnam and South Vietnam – with the US backing the South. In the end the US withdrew, the Republic of Vietnam lost and both North and South ended up under the control of the communist government.

The United States government, and allied forces, opted to deploy a number of troops to South Vietnam following the First Indochina war, in 1954, all the way through to 1973. US military advisers had played a role in Vietnam since 1950, firstly helping French colonial forces. By 1956, these US advisers were responsible for training the South Vietnam armed forces. The number of US troops in Vietnam grew from the days of John F Kennedy, who was responsible for sending 16,000, to a more significant deployment under the presidency of Lyndon Johnson. While almost all of the armed forces departed following the Paris Peace Accords, the last troops left in April 1975.

During the Vietnam conflict, clashes took place in many different forms. Vietnam industry and infrastructure became a prime target during the conflict, which military tacticians generally target as a means of weakening their opponent and dampening morale – this was largely completed by US aircraft performing aerial bombings. Chemical Defoliants were also deployed as a means of reducing the ability for troops to seek cover in the mountains and jungles which were leveraged by North Vietnamese troops to initiate guerilla attacks. When the capital of South Vietnam, Saigon, fell the war came to an end culminating in a North Vietnamese victory.

The 1968 election saw Richard Nixon promise “peace with honor”. This involved building the AVRN so that they could handle the defence of Republic of Vietnam – this strategy would later evolve to be known as the Nixon Doctrine. This was met with contempt from some – as it suggested only the US had experienced lost through the conflict – and left commentators and political opponents with ammunition to oppose his ideas. Although many parallels were drawn between Nixon and Kennedy, in terms of their strategy, Nixon’s desire to continue and broaden the war put him in a camp of his own.

The anti-war movement was gaining momentum in the United States, which lead to cries from Nixon for the “silent majority” of US citizens to make their opinion heard in their support for the war. Public opinion, although wavering, suffered more than ever when revelation of the My Lai Massacre were revealed. The killing of civilians, which included women and children, sparked outrage internationally and strengthened the position of Nixon’s opponents.

A fantastic day’s riding through some awesome scenery. We pass the town of Thuan Chau and on through an area inhabited by mainly white Hmong, where the women are dressed with bright pink tassels and pompoms on their black headdresses. After a steep climb of 14km we end the day with a spectacular down hill to Tuan Giao. Overnight in hotel Note: Some transfers will be necessary.

Day 6: Tuan Giao - Dien Bien (81 km cycling) (B,L,D)

After a hearty breakfast we set off through picturesque gorges on a slightly more gentle day. The route undulates through quiet back roads gradually downhill towards Dien Bien Phu. Overnight in Hotel.

Day 7: Dien Bien Phu - Muong Lay (100 km cycling) (B,L,D)

Before leaving we stop to visit the DBP war museum. Dien Bien Phu is where the Vietnamese overcame the occupying French Forces and celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2004. The museum gives a fascinating insight into the history of this remarkable event. Our cycle route follows the Nam Na River through a lush, undulating landscape of ferns, bananas and bamboo to Muong Lay. After lunch we tackle the gradual climb of 400m, and then descend to Lai Chau, our home for the night. Overnight in Hotel.

Day 8: Muong Lay- Tam Duong (105 km cycling) (B,L,D)

Leaving our hotel, we cross a Chinese-built suspension bridge over the river and weave our way through the spectacular Nam Na river valley. We will probably see White Thai, Kho Mu and Red and White Hmong hill tribes as we pass. We may have time to stop to visit a small village of Mang people. The road continues through spectacular gorges before the inevitable uphill climb. This is a tough haul, but the reward is a wonderful 10km descent through banana plantations into Tam Duong. Overnight in hotel

Day 9: Tam Duong - Sapa (16 km cycling) (B,L,D)

Our final day is possibly the most breathtaking ride of the trip. Today is a long day, so we plan to leave as early as possible. An excellent smooth surface makes riding a joy through some of the most spectacular scenery we’ve seen as we head up towards Heaven’s Gate, before enjoying the awesome 16km downhill into Sapa. You will have a chance to relax before our celebration meal at Nature Bar and Grill restaurant. Overnight in hotel
